Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The Carolina Mudcats scored two runs in the ninth inning, but came up one short in a 3-2 loss to Myrtle Beach on Wednesday night at TicketReturn.com Field. The loss was Carolina's 14th in one-run finals this year, and second straight to the Pelicans.
Myrtle Beach increased their Carolina League-best record to 29-16 while the Mudcats fell to 15-30 in the first half.
Jerad Eickhoff (4-2) was dominant in the win for Myrtle Beach. The right-hander held Carolina scoreless for eight innings before the ninth inning comeback. He allowed seven hits, but struck out three without a walk.
Robert Whitenack (0-1) pitched well for the Mudcats in the loss. The right-hander allowed one run on four hits over five innings. He walked three, and fanned two.
The Pelicans scored in the first inning for the second straight time. Luis Sardinas singled, stole second and scored from third on a ground out by Trever Adams.
Neither team would again dent the score column until the eighth. Against reliever Grant Sides, the Pelicans put runners at the corners thanks to a pair of walks and a wild pitch. Edwin Garcia grounded a single into center that scored both runners for a 3-0 lead.
Against Eickhoff in the ninth, Yhoxian Medina led off with a single, and raced to third on a base hit by Luigi Rodriguez. Ryan Harvey replaced Eickhoff, and threw a wild pitch that scored Medina to break up the shutout.
Francisco Lindor and Joey Wendle drew back-to-back walks off Harvey to load the bases. Myrtle Beach, again, went to the bullpen for Jose Monegro. He induced a grounder from Jordan Smith that turned into a double play. Rodriguez scored to cut the deficit to one, and Lindor moved to third.
Tony Wolters earned a base on balls against Monegro, but the right-hander struck out Bo Greenwell to end the game.
The Mudcats look to avoid a sweep against Myrtle Beach on Thursday night. First pitch at TicketReturn.com Field is set for 7:05 p.m. The team returns home on May 24th for a three-game tilt with the Winston-Salem Dash.
