Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
OVERVIEW ... The Myrtle Beach Pelicans are celebrating their 15th Anniversary season on the Grand Strand and are in their third season as the Advanced-A affiliates of the Texas Rangers. More than 3 million fans have attended a regular season Pelicans game since the franchise's inception in 1999. The team has won more than 1,000 regular season games in the last 15 seasons.
YESTERDAY ... The Myrtle Beach Pelicans snapped a two-game losing streak Tuesday, clipping the Carolina Mudcats 3-2 in 11 innings at TicketReturn.com Field. Edwin Garcia supplied a pinch-hit, RBI infield single in the 11th inning to clinch the win. The Pelicans have won four of five against the Mudcats this season and are now 17-4 at home. Home field - Winning better than 80 percent of their home tilts this season, the Pelicans have the best winning percentage in all of Advanced A.
FILLING IN ... The Pelicans acting manager this series is former big leaguer Casey Candaele, who is the Rangers infield coordinator. Candaele spent parts of nine seasons in the big leagues, most notably with Montreal and Houston. He finished fourth in the Rookie of the Year voting in 1987, hitting .272 in 138 games that season. Overall, including the minor leagues, his playing career spanned 15 seasons.
WALK OFFS ... The Pelicans have had a last at-bat win on their last three home stands. Kellin Deglan had a walk-off, three-run home run on April 27. Prior to Garcia's game-winner last night, Drew Robinson had a game-winner on the last home stand.
STREAKING ... Patrick Cantwell's 10-game hitting streak is the longest in the Carolina League. Lynchburg's David Rohm's 12-game streak recently came to an end. Myrtle Beach's Odubel Herrera led the league with a 22-game spurt last season.
UP NEXT ... Tonight is a Wiener Wednesday featuring $1 hot dogs all game long. Tomorrow will be "Hangover Night" at the park. In addition to "Thirsty Thursday" the Pelicans will be celebrating the great moments in the Hangover movie series.
COACHING STAFF ... Jason Wood returns for his third season as the Pelicans skipper and his fifth as a coach in the Rangers system. He is the only Carolina League skipper to have guided his team to back-to-back postseasons in 2011 and 2012. His staff includes pitching coach Steve Mintz, hitting coach Josue Perez and assistant Humberto Miranda - all three in their first year with the Birds.
ON THE AIR ... All 140 Myrtle Beach Pelicans games in 2013 can be heard on Fox Sports Radio on the Grand Strand (AM 1050 and FM 101.9). Video for all 70 home games is available online at www.milb.tv.
