Carolina Mudcats News Release
Myrtle Beach, S.C. - Edwin Garcia bounced an infield single inches past the glove of J.D. Reichenbach to plate the winning run as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans escaped the Carolina Mudcats 3-2 in 11 innings on Tuesday night at TicketReturn.com Field. Carolina (15-29) dropped their 13th game decided by one run, and fell to 1-3 in extra-inning games.
Ryan Harvey (4-0) induced a double play to evade the Mudcats in the top of the 11th, and Myrtle Beach improved to a league-best 28-16. Jordan Smith represented the go-ahead run at third base in the final frame, but was left stranded on the twin killing.
J.D. Reichenbach (1-2) absorbs a tough loss for Carolina, allowing a run on two hits over 1.1 innings.
The Pelicans started the last of the 11th with a double to the left field wall by Kellin Deglan. Pinch runner Jake Skole beat out a throw to third on a bunt attempt by Royce Bolinger. The Mudcats chose to walk Chris Grayson to load the bases, and create a force at any bag.
Reichenbach got Preston Beck to pop out to second before pinch hitter Edwin Garcia rolled a grounder just out of reach. Second baseman Joey Wendle's throw home was not in time to prevent Skole from scoring the game-winner.
Carolina rallied from a one-run deficit twice to force extras. Trailing 1-0 in the second, Smith singled to lead off. Tony Wolters mashed a double to left-center, driving in Smith to tie the score.
Myrtle Beach reclaimed in the lead with a run in the fourth, but Tyler Naquin singled home Joe Sever to knot the score 2-2.
The bullpens would hold the game scoreless the rest of regulation and into extras before Garcia's heroics.
The Mudcats continue their series with Myrtle Beach on Wednesday night. First pitch at TicketReturn.com Field is set for 7:05 p.m. The team returns home on May 24th for a three-game tilt with the Winston-Salem Dash. Purchase tickets today by calling (919) 269-2287, or visiting carolinamudcats.com.
