Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
For the second consecutive game, the Traverse City Beach Bums got seven shutout innings from their start as this time Jake Sabol turned in the gem and the Beach Bums broke open a close game late, defeating the Evansville Otters 10-0 in a game shortened to eight innings due to fog on Tuesday night.
Leading 3-0 into the eighth, Taylor Wrenn got the inning started with a single. Marcus Nidiffer followed with a walk to put runners on first and second before Andrew Cohn singled home Wrenn to make it 4-0. A walk to Ryan Still loaded the bases before Matt Howard was hit by a pitch to force in Nidiffer and push the lead to 5-0. The scoring continued as a Jose Vargas groundout plated Cohn. Chase Burch then lined a single to right, bringing around Still and Howard to extend the lead to 8-0. Two batters later, Chris Cowell walked. Wrenn finished the offensive inning he started with a triple deep into the left-centerfield fog, sending both Burch and Cowell plateward. At that point, the umpires deemed the fog was too thick to effectively play through and pulled the players off the field.
The beneficiary of all the runs was Sabol, though the right-hander needed just the first inning cushion the Beach Bums spotted him. Sabol went seven shutout innings, allowing four hits, walking none and striking out four. Matt Miller came on in the eighth, while the game was still 3-0 and thus earned the save. Starter Jason Ridenhour (0-1) took the loss for Evansville.
Offensively, Scott Woodward had three hits, scored and drove in a run while Wrenn was 2-for-5 with two RBI.
Traverse City plated single runs in the first and second innings on a Sean Gusrang groundout and a Woodward double. They would tally again in the sixth when a Vargas double brought home Cohn.
The series continues tomorrow with a Weenie Wednesday at Wuerfel Park with $1 hot dogs at the game. Jacob Clem will take the mound for the Beach Bums against Bryce Morrow for Evansville. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. For tickets or information, call 943-0100, log onto to tcbeachbums.com or stop by the Wuerfel Park ticket office.
