Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - It's been feast or famine this season for the Stockton Ports offense. One day after scoring 14 runs on 16 hits, the Ports mustered just four hits as they lost a 1-0 ballgame to the Bakersfield Blaze, who made an unearned run in the first inning hold up for the entire game.
Juan Perez led off the first inning with a single to center off Ports starter Drew Granier (4-3). Perez stole second and advanced to third when the throw from catcher Ryan Delgado skipped into center field. Yorman Rodriguez grounded out to first to bring in Perez and give the Blaze a 1-0 lead.
Blaze starter Jonathan Moscot (1-6) faced the minimum through four innings, allowing just an infield single to Antonio Lamas in that span. Moscot pitched around a one-out walk in the fifth inning and retired the final five batters he faced and 17 of 19 overall in his outing. The Blaze right-hander earned his first win of the season, going six shutout innings and allowing just one hit while striking out a season-high nine.
Granier pitched around a walk and a single in the third and escaped a jam in the fifth with runners at second and third with two outs, striking out Rodriguez to end that threat.
Granier pitched into the seventh inning and was lifted after allowing a one-out single and a walk. Blake Hassebrock came into the game for Stockton and got Chris Berset to line into a double-play to end the threat.
Granier suffered the tough-luck loss, going 6.1 innings and allowing an unearned run on four hits while walking four and striking out eight.
Hassebrock tossed 2.2 perfect innings out of the bullpen and recorded a pair of strikeouts.
Pat Doyle pitched around a one-out double by Max Muncy to keep the Ports off the board in the seventh. After getting back-to-back strikeouts to start the eighth, Dusty Robinson singled up the middle and Myrio Richard doubled to left, putting runners at second and third with two outs. Doyle was lifted for El'Hajj Muhammad (SV, 3), who struck out Bobby Crocker to extinguish Stockton's biggest threat of the game.
Muhammad pitched around a one-out walk drawn by Muncy in the ninth and got Delgado to hit into a game-ending double-play to notch his third save of the season.
Stockton struck out a season-high 15 times in the contest, also a season-high strikeout total in a single game for Blaze pitching.
The Ports and Blaze wrap up their four-game set on Saturday night at Banner Island Ballpark. James Simmons (0-0, 0.00) makes his first start of the season for Stockton after coming from Triple-A Sacramento. Bakersfield will counter with right-hander James Allen (2-4, 5.06 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PDT.
