Bethancourt, La Stella Lead Braves Past Stars

PEARL, MS -- Christian Bethancourt and Tommy La Stella drove in two runs apiece to lead the Mississippi Braves to a 5-1 victory over the Huntsville Stars at Trustmark Park. Mycal Jones, Bethancourt and La Stella combined for six of the M-Braves nine hits Monday night. The series continues with game three Tuesday at 7:00 PM.

Mississippi (24-13) scored five runs on nine hits while Huntsville (14-23) plated one run on eight hits. With the win and the Jacksonville Suns loss at Mobile, the M-Brave gain a game in the standings and now lead the Southern League South Division by 2.5 games.

Huntsville took a 1-0 lead in the sixth. Kentrail Davis reached on a fielder's choice before coming in to score on a Jason Rogers double to center field.

Phil Gosselin delivered a pinch hit single to lead off the sixth. Mycal Jones followed with a single to right, putting runners at the corners. Jones promptly stole second, his 13th swipe of the season. Christian Bethancourt then delivered a sacrifice fly to right, tying the game at 1-1. Tommy La Stella drilled one into left, plating Jones and giving the M-Braves a 2-1 lead. Edward Salcedo followed with another sacrifice fly, extending the M-Braves lead to 3-1.

The M-Braves extended its lead to 5-1 in the seventh. Gosselin reached on a fielder's choice and moved to third on Jones' single to left field. Bethancourt and La Stella followed with back-to-back singles to drive in Gosselin and Jones.

M-Braves starter J.R. Graham threw his warm up pitches before the third but exited the game with an unknown injury after two scoreless innings. He'd given up one hit and struck out one. Juan Jaime made his M-Braves debut, working a scoreless third.

Andrew Russell (1-0) worked three innings for the M-Braves, limiting the Stars to one earned run on three hits and one strikeout. Mark Lamm (S, 3) tossed the final three innings to pick up his third save of the season. He gave up four hits and two walks while striking out three.

Ariel Pena (2-3) started and went five and one-third innings for Huntsville. He gave up two earned runs on four hits, a walk and five strikeouts.

M-Braves lefty Alex Wood (2-1, 0.47) counters Stars right-hander Taylor Jungmann (2-4, 6.51) in game three of this five-game series. First pitch is set for 7:00 PM. Gates open at 6:00 PM.
