Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
HURON - An eighth-inning rally came up short for the Sioux Falls Canaries, and the Sioux City Explorers tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth as they defeated the Canaries 8-5 on Friday night in Huron, S.D.
Sioux City put up three consecutive one-run innings to open the game and then scored twice more in the fifth to lead 5-1.
The Canaries however, pulled to within 6-5 after a solo homer in the sixth and a three-run rally in the eighth.
The Canaries started the eighth off with a solo homer by J.P. Ramirez which was followed by Anthony Trajano reaching as he was hit by a pitch then moved to second after a walk to Jared Clark.
Next up for the Canaries, Tim Pahuta hit a grounder to second base but while the Explorers tried to turn a double play, the throw to first was wild allowing Trajano to score from first and Pahuta took second. After a ground out to second, Jake Taylor picked up a two-out RBI single scoring Pahuta. However, the rally ended there leaving the Canaries trailing 6-5, heading into the ninth.
The Explorers' Peter Barrow led of the ninth with a homer to left, while a pair of singles, a passed ball and a sacrifice fly gave the Explorers a second insurance run.
The Canaries scored their first run in the third inning after a pair of one out singles by Steve Domecus and Nick Van Stratten left runners at first and third for Cory Morales. Morales then hit a sacrifice fly to right field plating Domecus.
Sioux Falls starter Kyle Ruwe went four innings, giving up three runs and five hits. He struck out one. Kyle Vasquez had a solid effort working innings five through eight giving up three runs. He struck out five including the side in the eighth inning.
The Canaries complete their exhibition schedule with a free home game against the Wichita Wingnuts at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 11 at Sioux Falls Stadium.
