
Wingnuts Defeat Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Wichita Wingnuts defeated the Sioux Falls Canaries 12-2 at Sioux Falls Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Already leading 4-2 in the top of the seventh, the Wingnuts scored five runs to break the game open. With two outs and no one on base, Ryan Khoury singled down the right field line. An Abel Nieves walk and a David Amberson infield single helped Wichita load the bases. Cole Armstrong then slugged a three-run double to left-center that made it 7-2. After Cole Loehrs was hit by a pitch, Jared McDonald doubled to the left field fence to plate two more runs.
Wichita added three more runs in the top of the ninth on a single from Armstrong, a double from Loehrs, and a sacrifice fly from Blake Bergeron.
Chris Smith earned the win in relief for the Wingnuts, allowing one earned run on two hits in three innings. Smith struck out four and walked three.
Tyler White, Daniel Bennett, and Lincoln Holdzkom each threw an inning of scoreless relief. Bennett struck out the side in order in the bottom of the eighth, while Holdzkom worked a perfect bottom of the ninth on just eight pitches.
The Canaries took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a two-out, RBI single to right-center from Kevin Dultz.
Loehrs briefly tied the game for the Wingnuts in the fourth when he singled home Amberson from second base with two outs. A Cory Morales two-out, RBI single in the bottom of the inning put the Canaries back in front at 2-1.
Wichita took their first lead with a three-run top of the fifth. Stephen Yoo hit a two-run double to left-center, while Nieves drove in the Wingnuts' fourth run with a sacrifice fly to right.
Junior Guerra started for the Wingnuts and took a no-decision, allowing one earned run on three hits in three innings. Guerra struck out two and walked three.
Jordan Whatcott started for Sioux Falls and also took a no-decision, allowing one earned run on one hit in four innings Whatcott struck out two and walked four.
Ben Moore allowed all three of Wichita's runs in the fourth and took the loss.
McDonald reached base four times, while Amberson and Armstrong, and Loehrs reached three times each.
The Wingnuts travel to Joplin, MO to face the Kansas City T-Bones at historic Joe Becker Stadium on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. All the action can be heard locally on Oldies 92.7 KWME and worldwide at www.kleyam.com The Wingnuts finish their exhibition schedule on Wednesday, May 15th when they host the Winnipeg Goldeyes at 11:05 a.m. Tickets are just $7 general admission and can be purchased at the gate.
The 2013 season of Wichita Wingnuts baseball begins Thursday, May 16th against the Kansas City T-Bones at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Prior to the game, a ceremony celebrating the life of bench coach Brian Rose will take place.
Beginning this season, fans can use cash at all points of sale in Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Debit and credit cards will still be accepted. Fans can resolve outstanding balances on cash cards from previous years until June 1st, 2013.
