Long Island Ducks News Release
(Central Islip, NY) - The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Somerset Patriots 10-9 on Friday night in the first game of a three-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.
Somerset jumped on the board with four unearned runs in the first inning courtesy of a grand slam by Luis Montanez off Ducks starter John Brownell. Long Island answered back with two in their half of the inning off Patriots starter Erik Arnesen on a Ray Navarrete RBI double and a sac fly by Adam Bailey.
After the Pats grabbed a run in the second, the Ducks scored twice in the second and twice in the third to take a 6-5 lead. Another Navarrete RBI double, Ben Broussard's run-scoring single, and a two-run single by Danny Perales did the damage. Somerset tied the game with a run in the sixth and took the lead with three more in the seventh. However, two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth for Long Island tied the game back up at nine. A two-run homer to left by Gabe Suarez and a RBI single to center by Ralph Henriquez highlighted the scoring.
In the ninth, Somerset took the lead for good on a RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Eddy Martinez-Esteve. Neither starter factored into the decision. Brownell allowed six runs (two earned) on nine hits in five and one-third innings while striking out six, and Arnesen yielded six runs on 11 hits in four innings of work. Jason Lowey (1-0) earned the win with a scoreless two-thirds of an inning, while Leo Rosales (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing one unearned run on one hit in the ninth. Jon Hunton earned his ninth save with a scoreless ninth.
The Ducks and Patriots continue their three-game set on Saturday with a day/night doubleheader. Game time for the opener is slated for 1:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 12:05. It's Peanut-Free/Food Allergy Awareness Day, and there will be no sale of peanuts at the ballpark during the game, giving those struggling with peanut allergies the chance to attend a ballgame. Right-hander Connor Graham takes the mound for the Ducks against Patriots righty Brad Thompson.
The nightcap is set to begin at 7:05 p.m., with the ballpark gates opening at 6:05. Following the game, all fans in attendance will be treated to a Grucci Fireworks Extravaganza, presented by Nicolock. Southpaw Matt Way toes the rubber for the Ducks against Patriots left-hander Graham Taylor.
