Late Rally Leads Chiefs Past Bulls

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, eked out a 3-2 win over the Durham Bulls on Tuesday night. Syracuse recovered from a 2-0 deficit with three runs in the seventh inning as right-hander Ryan Perry earned his first win of the season. The Chiefs have now won the first two games of this four-game series.

Durham (20-12) got the scoring started early against Perry in the first inning. With two outs, right fielder Wil Myers singled after fouling off four two-strike pitches. Designated hitter Leslie Anderson followed with a two-run home run deep into the right-field seats, putting the Bulls on the board first.

The 2-0 score would hold until the seventh inning. Bulls left-hander Alex Torres shut Syracuse out for the first six frames, with the Chiefs stranding the bases loaded in both the third and fifth innings.

Syracuse (12-19), however, turned the tables in the seventh inning against Durham southpaw Frank de los Santos. Catcher Jhonatan Solano started the frame with a single to center field on an 0-2 pitch, bringing up right fielder Chris Rahl. The Chiefs' ninth-place hitter then smacked a home run over the 32-foot wall in left field, tying the game at two. Left fielder Eury Perez followed that with a double to left field, knocking out de los Santos in favor of Will Inman. The right-hander entered for second baseman Jeff Kobernus, who laid down a sacrifice bunt back to Inman. But the pitcher's throw to first base sailed into right field for a throwing error, with Perez scoring on the play for a 3-2 lead.

The Chiefs' pitchers would do the rest. Perry earned the win with six-plus innings of five-hit, two-run ball. Left-hander Fernando Abad and right-hander Mike Crotta each tossed a perfect frame of relief before Chiefs closer Erik Davis entered for the ninth inning. With two runners on and one out, Davis induced a double-play groundout from Vince Belnome, ending Syracuse's second straight win.

The Chiefs and Bulls will tee up an early third game of the series on Wednesday afternoon at 11:00. Syracuse left-hander Danny Rosenbaum and Durham right-hander Alex Colome are scheduled to square off.
