Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

WINNIPEG - Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today that right-handed pitcher Justin Garcia has been signed to a contract for the 2013 season.

Garcia, 26, was acquired by the Goldeyes from the Amarillo Sox earlier this offseason. In 22 games, including 21 starts, with Amarillo in 2012, the product of Las Vegas, Nev. went 9-3 and 3.99 ERA during 135.1 innings of work. He posted a complete-game 5-0 shutout on July 26 on the road against the Wichita Wingnuts, which is something a Goldeyes pitcher hasn't done since Ace Walker pitched a one-hit shutout against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in 2010.

"In my opinion, he's one of the top of starters in this league," Forney said. "Other than Ace Walker, few guys over the last couple of years have thrown as many innings as Justin Garcia. He had two really successful seasons down in Amarillo. He has quality pitches and is going to give you a chance to win every fifth day."

Garcia's debut with the Sox in 2011 was also a strong campaign. He made 20 starts and one relief appearance, going 9-5 with a 4.66 ERA.

After being drafted by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 25th round of the 2007 MLB amateur draft, Garcia played four seasons in their system. He reached Double-A and Triple-A in 2010 before surgery to remove bone chips in his right arm caused him to miss the majority of the season. At Single-A in 2008, Garcia set a team appearance record with the Columbus Catfish by seeing action in 41 games out of the bullpen.

Season tickets and nine-game mini packs for the 2013 season are available by calling the Goldeyes office at 204-982-2273.
