Weiner Dog Racing at Bucs Game this Saturday

Urbandale (IA) Yips and woofs will bleed into the usual sound of skates gliding on ice and sticks slapping pucks on February 23rd at Buccaneer Arena when the Des Moines Buccaneers and the Animal Rescue League of Central Iowa partner for the second annual Doxie Dash. During the first intermission of the Buccaneers' game against the Chicago Steel that night, dozens of dachshunds will race across the ice in an attempt for prizes and to raise money for the ARL.
Opening face-off is scheduled for 7:05pm with the Doxie Dash races beginning at approximately 7:30pm.
Over 30 registered dogs will participate in the race with proceeds from the entry fee going directly to the ARL. All fans are encouraged to bring pet items such as food and toys that will be collected by ARL volunteers at the game.
"Teams in the region have allowed fans to bring their pets to games for years and we wanted to do something different" said Buccaneers' Director of Communications Scott Montesano. "Wiener dog racing has been popular elsewhere and we look forward to having it here in the metro area."
The dogs will race from one end of the ice to other in a single heat with the winner receiving prizes for both the dog and its handlers.
"This has been done at many minor league hockey games and the ice isn't a problem for the dogs" added Montesano. "The dogs have better balance than the humans."
The Buccaneers are home on both Friday and Saturday this week. On Friday the Buccaneers take on the defending Clark Cup Champion Green Bay Gamblers before facing off against Chicago on Saturday. Game time both nights is at 7pm.
The Des Moines Buccaneers are in their 33rd consecutive season in the United States Hockey League. Since 1980, the Buccaneers have produced hundreds of NCAA Division I players and dozens of professional alumni.
