Rangers Double up on Otters 4-2

February 16, 2013 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Kitchener Rangers

Brent Pedersen scored the game winning goal for the Kitchener Rangers as they doubled up on the Erie Otters 4-2 on Saturday night. Joshua Leivo scored his 25th of the season in the win, extending his recent point streak to 14 games.

The Otters took an early 1-0 lead when Hayden Hodgson and Joel Wigle broke into the Rangers zone on an odd-man rush, just past the five minute mark of the opening period. Hodgson beat Rangers netminder Joel Vienneau for his seventh goal of the season, with a second assist from Jack Kuzmyk.

Late in the frame, Kitchener pulled even, scoring with 2:06 remaining before intermission. Curtis Meighan won a draw in Erie's zone and Ryan Murphy collected the puck behind him. The captain's point shot was redirected between the legs of goalie Oscar Dansk by veteran Rangers forward Ben Thomson. The goal was the New Jersey Devils prospect's 12th of the year, a new career high for the fourth-year winger.

The Rangers led shots on goal 19-10 in the opening 20 minutes of play.

Early in the second period, Joshua Leivo gave the Rangers their first lead of the evening. The Toronto Maple Leafs prospect snapped a shot past Dansk for his 25th of the season, extending his recent point streak to a 14th game. The former Sudbury Wolves forward has 21 points in 17 games since arriving in a trade last month. Matia Marcantuoni drew the only assist on the goal, his third point in two contests.

The Rangers jumped to a 3-1 advantage before the midway point. Just 17 seconds into Kitchener's first power play opportunity, sophomore forward Brent Pedersen scored his 13th of the season, sticking with the puck at the net and pushing it past Dansk. The draft-eligible winger's power play marker was assisted by Justin Bailey and defenceman Ben Fanelli.

Kitchener continued to lead shots on goal in the middle frame, posting a 22-4 advantage.

The Otters pulled within one goal with less than seven minutes to play. Luke Cairns jumped on a puck inside the Rangers blueline, eventually finding Connor Brown. He batted his 26th of the season past Vienneau, with a second assist from Dane Fox.

Matt Puempel fired a backhand shot into an empty net with 1:13 left to play, lifting the Rangers to a 4-2 advantage. His fourth goal in three games was also his team-leading 27th of the season. Evan McEneny earned a helper on the play.

The Otters out-shot the Rangers 8-7 in the third period, but Kitchener finished the contest with a 48-22 overall advantage.

With the win, the Rangers win their regular season series with the Otters six games to two and improve their overall record to 33-15-1-7.
