Saginaw Spirit Defeat Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and Extend Win

On Friday night, the Saginaw Spirit strapped on their skates and took home ice to play the Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds for the seventh time this season.

The first twenty minutes of play contained three Spirit goals. The first was recorded by Assistant Captain Eric Locke who took advantage of a power play and buried a quick rebound. His 27th goal this season was assisted by Steven Strong and Jimmy Lodge. Recently named OHL Player of the Week, Spirit Captain Garret Ross increased the lead to 2-0 with another power play goal assisted by Eric Locke and Jason Shaw. While only 29 seconds remained, Garret Ross converted his second goal of the night with a quick wrist shot past Soo goalie Matt Murray. Detroit Red Wings prospect and Spirit goalie Jake Paterson showcased his skills once again and held the score to 3-0 Saginaw lead to finish the first period.

The second period was offensively quiet until less than two minutes were left. Greyhound winger Brandon Alderson successfully put the puck in the net assisted by Nick Cousins and David Broll making the score 3-1. Seconds later with his second goal of the night, Eric Locke answered for Saginaw with an assist from Jimmy Lodge. The second period closed with a 4-1 Spirit lead.

Midway through the third period, Greyhound wing and Phoenix Coyotes prospect Andrew Fritsch found a way to score while shorthanded. His special teams goal was assisted by Ryan Sproul and Nick Cousins. In a final attempt to even the score, Darnell Nurse recorded the last Soo goal of the game with an assist from Brandon Alderson and David Broll. To close the door on the scoring, Saginaw Captains took over and Eric Locke sent the puck into an empty net for his hat-trick goal of the game assisted by Garret Ross, sending the crowd home with yet another win as the Spirit took the game 5-3.
