Red Bull New York News Release
HARRISON, NJ (Jan. 17, 2013) - The New York Red Bulls selected midfielder Ian Christianson from Georgetown University with its second round (22nd overall) pick today at the 2013 MLS SuperDraft located at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, IN.
"We had a short list of players who we hoped would make it through to us with the 22nd pick and Ian was on that list," said Red Bulls Interim Head Coach Mike Petke. "Ian is a player we have seen many times at Georgetown.
We also interviewed him and his personality fit what we are looking for at the club. We think that we can help develop Ian into a potential contributor for our team."
Christianson played four years for Georgetown and wrapped up his college career by making 26 starts, notching two goals and two assists, and captaining the Hoyas as a senior to the NCAA Division I Final. That year, the Cedar Rapids, IA native was a NSCAA Third Team All-America selection, NSCAA First Team All-Northeast Region pick and was on the All-BIG EAST First Team.
A two-time NSCAA Second Team All-Northeast region and All-BIG EAST First Team member, Christianson was the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year in 2010 after notching five goals and seven assists in 20 games. Christianson was part of the 2010 squad that helped Georgetown earn its third all-time NCAA Tournament berth and first in 13 years. During his career at Georgetown, Christianson amassed 78 appearances (77 of which were starts) and tallied 14 goals and 10 assists.
New York acquired the second round selection on Dec. 3, 2012 from the Portland Timbers along with defender Kosuke Kimura in exchange for allocation money and the MLS Home Grown rights for defender Bryan Gallego.
The Red Bulls did not have its natural first round pick in 2013, as it was a part of a trade with the Timbers on Jan. 12, 2012 that sent forward Kenny Cooper to New York.
