Americans Defeat T-Birds

January 13, 2013 - Western Hockey League (WHL) Seattle Thunderbirds

KENNEWICK, January 13, 2013 - Justin Feser had a hat trick Sunday night to lead his Tri-City Americans to a 5-3 victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds at the Toyota Center.

Seattle (16-25-2-1) took a 1-0 lead at 5:51 of the first period. Branden Troock took a wrist shot from the right circle that beat Tri-City goalie Luke Lee-Knight over right leg.

Tri-City (24-16-1-2) tied the game 1-1 at 10:58 of the first when Zachary Yuen scored. Justin Feser and Malte Stromwall had the assists.

The Americans went in front 2-1 at 11:58 of the first on a goal from Justin Guieterrez. Drydn Dow and Ryan Chynoweth were credited with the assists.

Tri-City outshot Seattle 12-9 in the first period.

The T-Birds tied the game 2-2 early in the second period. Andrew Johnson followed up his own shot and beat Lee-Knight through the goalie's legs to get his first goal as a T-Bird. Justin Hickman centered the puck from the right corner to Johnson in the slot. Riley Sheen had the second assist on the goal.

Justin Feser got the lead back for Tri-City when he scored a power-play goal at 12:28 of the second period. Mitch Topping and Stromwall had the assists on the go-ahead goal.

Seattle outshot Tri-City 9-8 in the second period but the Americans held a 22-20 advantage in shots after two periods.

Feser scored at 11:48 of the third period to extend the Americans lead to 4-2. Stromwall had the only assist on the goal.

Feser completed the natural hat trick at 18:22 of the third with a four-on-three power-play goal. Topping and Yuen were credited with the assist.

Seattle cut the lead to two goals at 19:17 of the third when Seth Swenson scored a shorthanded goal. Adam Kambeitz fed the puck to Swenson in front of Lee-Knight for the goal.

Both teams had eight shots on goal in the third period and the Americans finished the game with a 30-28 advantage in shots.

Seattle goalie Brandon Glover stopped 25 of 30 shots and his record is now 15-19-2-1.

Lee-Knight made 25 saves on 28 shots and his record is now 2-3-0-0.

The T-Birds next game is Friday, January 18, against the Everett Silvertips at 7:35pm at Comcast Arena. This game will be televised in the Pacific Northwest on Root Sports. The T-Birds are home at ShoWare Center on Saturday, January 19, to take on the Portland Winterhawks at 7:05pm. They play the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Sunday, January 20, at 5:05pm at ShoWare Center.

T-Birds single game tickets for the 2012-13 season are available online at the T-Birds website and at the ShoWare Center box office. The ShoWare Center Box Office is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday game days at 10 a.m. and Sunday game days at noon.
