Wheeling Nailers News Release
Tuesday night in Wheeling, the Nailers welcomed the Greenville Road Warriors for the first of two games in less than 24 hours. Chris Barton scored two goals in his first game back, as the Nailers exploded for three goals in the first 6:56 of the game. Wheeling took those goals into the books, winning, 3-1.
The Nailers were happy to have Chris Barton back, and he proved it right away, scoring a goal 3:11 into the game. Luke Pither sent the puck into the left circle, where Barton spun, and slid a shot into the lower part of the net. Barton's second of the season, came on the power play, marking seven consecutive games with a power play tally for Wheeling. 1:52 later, Pither and Barton combined for a second goal, with Barton backhanding the puck up and over Nathan Lieuwen's glove. Less than two minutes after that, Cam Fergus caused a turnover behind the net, before finding Cody Chupp, who scored a beautiful shorthanded goal, burying it top shelf.
The Nailers continued to hold their 3-0 lead through the second period, despite a pair of posts hit by Cody Chupp and Chris Barton.
With 23 seconds left in the game, the Road Warriors broke the shutout bid, as Bretton Cameron knocked in the rebound of Jordie Johnston's shot from the right side. Despite that goal, Wheeling was able to take home the 3-1 decision, with post game fireworks, created by Scott Zurevinski and Andrew Yogan.
Peter Delmas made 21 saves on 22 shots, earning the win for the Nailers. Nathan Lieuwen took the loss for Greenville, stopping 31 of the 34 shots he faced.
The Nailers and Road Warriors will turn around, and play an 11:00 morning game on Wednesday.
