Red Bulls Forward Thierry Henry Named Finalist for Major League Soccer MVP
November 15, 2012 - Major League Soccer (MLS) - New York Red Bulls News Release
HARRISON, NJ (Nov. 15, 2012) - New York Red Bulls forward Thierry Henry was named as one of three finalists for the Major League Soccer Volkswagen Most Valuable Player Award today. In addition, New York defender Heath Pearce is a finalist for the Xbox Individual Fair Play Award.
Henry, who is vying for the honor with San Jose forward Chris Wondolowski and Sporting Kansas City midfielder Graham Zusi, had a stellar campaign for the Red Bulls, recording 15 goals and a team-high 12 assists in 25 regular season games played. The 2011 MLS Best XI selection finished in fifth place in MLS in goals and assists and was voted to the 2012 MLS All-Star team last summer for the second-straight year. Since joining the Red Bulls midseason in 2010, the World Cup, UEFA Champions League and European Championship winner has tallied 31 goals and 19 assists in 62 regular season appearances, 61 of which were starts. This is the first time that Henry has been a finalist for the MLS MVP award. The winner will be announced on Nov. 29.
Selected by Major League Soccer on criteria including fouls committed, cards received, games and minutes played as well as subjective evaluation of sportsmanlike behavior, Pearce, along with Chivas USA's Ante Jazic and the Chicago Fire's Logan Pause, is a finalist for the Xbox Individual Fair Play Award. Acquired on May 17, 2012 along with allocation money and future considerations from Chivas USA in exchange for forward Juan Agudelo, Pearce started in 18 games for New York, notching two goals. The 2012 MLS All-Star First XI selection also played the full 90 minutes in New York's two playoff games this year. The winner of the Individual Fair Play Award will be announced Nov. 19.
