Elmira Jackals News Release

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Elmira Jackals persevered through a brief blackout and a near bench-clearing brawl to pick up a 3-2 win over the South Carolina Stingrays on Friday night. The win improved Elmira to 6-1-0 on the season. Click here ioBdu5jQpXYfAR7Gc98U5CQVuiP-gpWCUXlJaODthBFcgzYgsyfcY=] for tonight's box score.

The Jackals did not get off to the start they were looking for on the road. After failing to cash in on an early power play opportunity the Jackals found themselves shorthanded when Andrew Rowe was whistled for hooking. At 8:45 Mike Hamilton sent a one-timer past Marc Cheverie for a 1-0 South Carolina lead. It was the first power play goal the Jackals surrendered all season. The Stingrays grew their lead at 15:01 when Matt Pistilli cashed in an unassisted goal. Things went screwy from there. In an attempt to energize his team, Elmira's Kevin Harvey dropped the gloves with Tyler Randell. Harvey was cut in the fight and required stitches. As he was being escorted to the dressing room, a power surge knocked out the lights at the Coliseum and started the first intermission three minutes and 20 seconds early.

After the generator kicked in and the lights warmed up the teams returned to the ice to resume the game. Brad Peltz started the Jackals' rally with his second goal of the season at 18:19. He potted the rebound of a Rob Bellamy shot and Jordan Pietrus also assisted. Dustin Gazley drew the Jackals even at 10:16 of the second when he drilled a one-timer past Stingrays goalie Adam Morrison. Rowe and Kyle Bushee set up Gazley's fourth of the season. Bushee then wristed home a power play goal at 16:53 to put Elmira in the drivers seat for the first time in the game.

The third period was relatively calm on the scoreboard, but was anything but on the ice. At 6:35 of the third South Carolina's Tyler McNeely slashed a number of Jackals players on the bench that started a melee. Harvey jumped over the bench to engage McNeely in a fight and both received game misconducts. In the aftermath of the fight Jackals head coach Dwight Mullins got into a shouting match with Stingrays assistant J.B. Bittner. Mullins was given a game misconduct as was Stingrays head coach Spencer Carbery. The Jackals couldn't convert on the ensuing five-minute power play but did add an empty-net goal by Rowe in the final minute.

Cheverie stopped 22 shots to pick up his fourth win of the season. Elmira was 1-for-3 on the power play and 1-for-2 on the penalty kill.
