Stars Sink Admirals 3-1
October 25, 2012 - American Hockey League (AHL) Texas Stars
CEDAR PARK, TX - Goaltender Jack Campbell made 23 saves and rookie defenseman Jamie Oleksiak scored the game-winning goal, his first professional goal, as the Texas Stars skated to a 3-1 victory over the Milwaukee Admirals Wednesday night at Cedar Park Center. From the first drop of the puck, Texas appeared to have injected some new life in their offense, spending most of the opening 20 minutes putting pressure on Admirals' goaltender Jeremy Smith. Following a tripping call on Milwaukee's Patrick Cehlin, the Stars power play went to work. From the corner, Francis Wathier found Travis Morin rushing to the net and connected with a sharp pass across the crease, which Morin one-timed into the net for his second goal of the season at 5:40. Jordie Benn would also be credited an assist on the game's first tally. The Stars outshot the Admirals 12-5 in the first period and they held Milwaukee without shot on goal for the first 15 minutes of the game.
The second frame was a scoreless, yet physical period that featured a scintillating breakaway save by Campbell on Scott Jackson, after the Milwaukee defenseman had exited the penalty box, and a short scrap between Francis Wathier and Admirals' captain Mike Moore.
Midway through the third period, the Stars found themselves on an odd-man rush and rookie defenseman Jamie Oleksiak took a drop pass from Cody Eakin and fired a wrist shot under Milwaukee goalie Jeremy Smith's glove at 11:46. Eakin and Tomas Vincour logged assists on the play. The Admirals would not go quietly, scoring with 5:26 remaining in regulation, when Mark Van Guilder tipped in a Mattias Ekholm shot from the point, spoiling Campbell's shutout bid. Texas sealed the victory with an empty goal from Antoine Roussel with 44 seconds remaining, assisted by Mike Hedden and Tyler Sloan.
Stars netminder Jack Campbell turned away 23 of the 24 shots he faced to record his second win of the season. Milwaukee's Jeremy Smith took the loss, making 25 saves on 28 shots. Texas out-shot the Admirals 28-24 and went 1-for-7 on the power play, while the Stars' penalty kill was successful in killing all three Milwaukee power plays in the game.
The Stars are back in action this Sunday, October 28th, when they travel north to face off against the Oklahoma City Barons at the Cox Convention Center at 4:00 p.m. The Texas Stars return to Cedar Park Center on Saturday, November 3rd as they host the Grand Rapids Griffins at 7:00 p.m for Family Four Pack Night.
