Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- Aberdeen scored the go ahead run in the top of the 11th inning on a wild pitch and ÃÂ Ironbirds relievers combined to retire the final 16 Vermont batters, including 11 by strikeout, for a 3-2 New York-Penn League victory over the Lake Monsters on Monday night at historic Centennial Field.
Vermont took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning as Austin Booker led off with a single and advanced to third on a double from Brett Vertigan before scoring on a wild pitch from Aberdeen starter Branden Kline. Vertigan then scored on a Chris Bostick RBI groundout to short, but the Lake Monsters would collect just three more hits and none after a Booker leadoff single in the sixth.
Aberdeen tied the game in the fourth on a two-run single from Scott Kalush off Vermont starter Brent Powers, who gave up just the two runs on nine hits with one walk and six strikeouts over seven innings (a season-high for a Lake Monsters pitcher this season). Ryan Dull struckout three in his two scoreless innings before Cecil Tanner walked three batters in the 11th and tossed a one-out wild pitch to score Cameron Edman with the winning run.
After four scoreless relief innings from Jesse Hernandez for Aberdeen, Josh Hader struckout five of the six batters he faced in the eighth and ninth innings. Sander Beck (4-3) struckout the side in the bottom of the 10th, while Tom Winegardner had two strikeouts and a popout in the 11th for his 10th save of the season. The five Aberdeen pitchers combined to strikeout 15 Lake Monsters and did not issue a walk after coming into the game with a league-high 328 walks.
Vertigan's double in the first inning extended his hitting streak to 17 games, the fourth longest in Lake Monsters history and the third longest in the New York-Penn League this season. With a hit in his next game, he would move into a tie for second in Vermont history and tie for the longest in the league this season.
The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for Vermont (32-42), who will host Aberdeen again on Tuesday at 6:05 pm at Centennial Field with the 2012 Tom Racine MVP being announced before the game. The Lake Monsters and Ironbirds will then wrap up the 2012 season on Wednesday beginning at 6:05 pm.
