Drive's Win Streak Snapped Following 8-4 Loss

September 2, 2012 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release

Greenville, SC - Fluor Field held its final fireworks show of the 2012 season on Sunday night, but the Hickory Crawdads (74-64, 38-31) held their own fireworks display in the second inning. A six-run frame was more than enough to take down the Greenville Drive (65-73, 31-37) in this one, as the Crawdads picked up an 8-4 victory.

All six of those second-inning runs came against Drive starter Madison Younginer (1-8). Jorge Alfaro scored the first run of the frame on a wild pitch, and Luis Sardinas hit a sacrifice fly to center to make it 2-0, but the big hits came shortly thereafter. Drew Robinson's double to the wall in right field brought two more runs home, and Trever Adams followed by launching a two-run homer to straightaway center field, extending the lead to 6-0.

The Drive scored a single run in the bottom half of the second. Boss Moanaroa drew a walk with two outs and came all the way around to score on a double to the left-center wall by Drew Turocy.

Hickory picked up another run in the fifth. Adams singled leading off the inning, and after Alfaro walked with one out, Jordan Akins singled through the middle to plate Adams and make it a 7-1 game.

The Drive's big inning on the night came in the bottom half of the fifth, as they scored three times. Matt Marquis walked with one out, and Jose Garcia doubled to right-center to move Marquis to third, but the right fielder bobbled the ball, allowing Marquis to score. Garin Cecchini came to bat with two outs in the inning and lined a double to left, scoring Garcia and Nick Natoli, who walked.

The Crawdads loaded the bases with nobody out in the seventh but only managed to bring one runner home. Adams singled, Deglan walked and Alfaro was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Kevin Torres then grounded into a double play, but Adams came home and capped the scoring on the night.

Nick Martinez (8-6) picked up the win for the Crawdads, allowing four runs in five innings while punching out eight Drive hitters. Luis Diaz threw five and a third innings of relief for Greenville, allowing two runs and striking out four.

Adams had a big night at the plate for Hickory, going 3-5 while scoring three runs and driving in two more. Cecchini was the lone Drive hitter to collect a pair of hits.

These two teams will meet again on Monday afternoon in the final game of the season. The Labor Day start time will be 2:05 PM. RHP Jason Garcia (6-6, 6.14) will start for the Drive, while Hickory sends RHP Jerad Eickhoff (13-7, 4.69) to the mound.

Following tomorrow's game, fans can stick around for a "Let's Hit 350" thank you celebration. Players will be signing autographs, live music in the 500 Club, wiffle ball in left-field, kids run the bases, and complimentary ice cream from the 7th Inning Stretch concession stand.
