Hawks and Captains Split Double-Header

South Bend Silver Hawks News Release


The South Bend Silver Hawks (65-64, 30-29) split a double-header with the Lake County Captains Thursday, dropping the first game 8-5 and taking the second game 9-3. The Silver Hawks enter play Friday three games behind Lake County and Fort Wayne in the eastern division playoff chase. The Silver Hawks are 4-3 on the current eight-game road trip.

Right-hander J.R. Bradley (7-8) earned the game two win, allowing one earned run on five hits over 3.2 innings. Cody Anderson (4-7) took the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, on one hit over two innings.

The Silver Hawks scored five runs in the third inning to open up a 6-1 advantage. Roidany Aguila and Eric Groff hit back-to-back run-producing doubles and all nine men came to the plate in the inning. With South Bend leading 6-2 in the sixth inning, Tom Belza hit a three-run home run to right-center, his seventh home run of the season. Belza finished 2-for-3.

Jesse Darrah started game two and did not factor in the decision, allowing two earned runs on four hits over 3.1 innings.

In game one, the Captains jumped out to an 8-1 lead after five innings. Jordan Smith recorded three hits for the Captains, who mustered 12 total hits in the game. Luigi Rodriguez broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning with a solo home run and the Captains never relinquished the lead.

Trailing 8-1, the Silver Hawks scored four runs in the seventh inning after two outs had been recorded. With the bases loaded and the potential tying runs on base, Enosil Tejada was brought in to notch his sixth save.

Left-hander Elvis Araujo (7-9) won game one, allowing one earned run on three hits over 5.1 innings. Andrew Barbosa (2-4) took the loss, surrendering four runs, three earned, on six hits over 3.1 innings.

The Silver Hawks and Captains play the final game of a four-game series Friday at Classic Park. Right-hander Conrad Flynn (0-0, 6.43) starts for South Bend and he will be opposed by righty Nick Pasquale (2-0, 1.96). First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m. EST.
