Staten Island Yankees News Release

In 1988, then President, Ronald Reagan, proclaimed August 21st National Senior Citizen Day, in honor of all that our elder statesmen have accomplished in their lives. Twenty-four years later, on that date, the Staten Island Yankees kicked off their HOPE Week festivities at Eger Nursing Home in Staten Island, in honor of our seniors.

On each of five consecutive days during the celebration of HOPE Week, the Baby Bombers shine a spotlight on a different organization worthy of recognition and support. Each day is designed so honorees can share their inspirational stories with players and staff, while being surprised with the day of their dreams. At its core, HOPE Week is about people helping people. The one thing everybody has - no matter where they come from, what their financial situation is or what kind of skills they possess - is time.

Earlier today, Staten Island Yankees players, front office staff and of course, Scooter the Holy Cow, went floor to floor, and door to door, visiting with the many residents, delivering autographs, hats, pins and most importantly, smiles. While the Staten Island Yankees were surprising the many excited residents, the tables were turned when the Baby Bombers met Joseph and Vanda D'Anna (photo attached). The Staten Island couple was celebrating 69 years of marriage, and couldn't have been happier.
