Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS - Iowa - Abel Baker provided both Cedar Rapids RBI and Frazier Hall scored two runs, but the Kernels fell to the Quad Cities River Bandits 8-2 on Wednesday. The Bandits (24-27, 59-61) have now won 12 of 16 contests against the Kernels in this season, while Cedar Rapids (15-36, 47-74) failed to string together consecutive victories.
Quad Cities offense mostly occurred from the 2nd to 4th innings, beginning with a couple of long balls. Kernels starter Cam Bedrosian had allowed a single home run in 68 2/3rd innings pitched before a two-out solo shot from Matt Williams put up the game's first run. Two hitters later, after a Nick Martini double, Luis Mateo's 11th home run of the season put the River Bandits ahead 3-0.
After a run in the 3rd scored on a sacrifice fly, Quad Cities added another three in the top of the 4th. With two outs in the inning, three consecutive singles scored Casey Rasmus, followed by a 2-RBI single from Anthony Melchionda.
The Kernels first run scored in the bottom of the 7th. Hall hit a lead-off double, and then was methodically moved to home. A Zach Borenstein ground out put Hall on third base before Baker hit a fly ball deep enough for a sacrifice fly.
Cedar Rapids added it's other tally in the bottom of the 8th. Three consecutive singles from Hall, Borenstein, and Baker again resulted in a Hall run on a Baker RBI. Quad Cities added another run in the 9th on three consecutive singles, ultimately resulting in David Medina's 2nd RBI of the game, and final score.
Joe Melioris put in a solid relief performance for the Kernels as he did not allow a run in 3 1/3rd innings along with 4 strikeouts. Bedrosian (3-10) took the loss for Cedar Rapids in a 3 2/3rd inning start, while River Bandits starter and Urbandale, Iowa native Bradley Watson (3-2) earned a victory in a 7 inning outing.
