Hawks Crumble in Eighth, Fall 7-1

South Bend Silver Hawks News Release


The South Bend Silver Hawks (60-60, 25-25) allowed a six-run eighth inning Wednesday and fell 7-1 in the opening game of a three-game series with the West Michigan Whitecaps at Coveleski Stadium. With Lake County's win against Dayton, the Silver Hawks are now two games out in the eastern division wild card chase.

Slade Smith (2-1) earned the win for West Michigan, hurling two scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Kable Hogben (4-3) was saddled with the loss, surrendering six earned runs on five hits over 0.2 innings.

With the game tied 1-1 entering the eighth inning, the Whitecaps sent 11 men to the plate and opened up a six-run lead. Zach Maggard laced a two-run triple while Chad Wright and Aaron Westlake each tallied RBI singles.

The Silver Hawks scored their only run of the game in the fifth inning on an RBI double from Chris Ellison. The Silver Hawks were 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and mustered just five total hits in the game.

Right-hander Archie Bradley started for South Bend and allowed one earned run on three hits over four innings. The first-rounder walked five and struck out eight. Brennan Smith started for West Michigan and allowed one earned run on five hits over five frames.

Jeff McVaney, Pat Leyland and Maggard each tallied two hits for the Whitecaps.

In his Silver Hawks debut, Conrad Flynn struck out four over three scoreless innings out of the Silver Hawks bullpen.

The Silver Hawks and Whitecaps play the middle game of the three-game series Thursday at Coveleski Stadium. Right-hander Tyler Green (4-6, 3.86) starts for South Bend and he will be opposed by left-hander Kyle Ryan (6-7, 4.05). First pitch is on tap for 7:05 p.m. EST.
