Arkansas Travelers News Release
NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Starter Sugar Ray Marimon and reliever Sam Runion combined to limit the Arkansas Travelers to one run on five hits on Sunday night at Dickey-Stephen Park as the Northwest Arkansas Naturals won the third game of their current four-game series with the Travelers by a final score of 5-1.
Before even throwing his first pitch of the game, Marimon (3-3) was staked to a 3-0 lead as the Naturals (13-30, 50-63) got their three runs on four hits off of Travs' starter Orangel Arenas in the top of the first inning. The first two Natural runs came home on a two-RBI base hit to right field by Mario Lisson while the third run was chased home a batter later on a RBI single by Carlo Testa.
The Travs (21-22, 48-65) would answer the opening salvo from the Naturals in the bottom half of the first as they sent six men to the plate, but were only able to tally one run. Renny Osuna, who reached with a one-out single and then stole second base to move into scoring position, scored the Travs' run when Casey Haerther delivered a two-out knock up the middle.
Mariomon quickly put the run-scoring first inning behind him as he allowed only two more Traveler hits through the remainder of his start that lasted six complete innings. In fact, over his last three innings, Marimon would hold the Travs hitless, but the right-hander had only two perfect innings over that stretch as he walked a pair in the fifth.
Insurance runs by the Naturals in the seventh and ninth innings eventually padded their lead to 5-1 as the game was then in the bullpen's hands.
Runion, who entered the game for Marimon in the seventh inning, picked up right where Marimon left off as he did not allow a hit until there were two outs in the top of the ninth inning. Nothing came of the two-out single by Jimmy Swift as the dominant relief appearance for Runion was good enough to earn him his first save with the Naturals.
With the win, Marimon improves to 3-3 on the season. Arenas takes the loss and falls to 4-8.
The Travelers will look to take the final game of the series on Monday night to avoid dropping the four-game set to the Naturals. First pitch in that game is set for 7:10 pm.
