
Jefferies Placed On Temporary Inactive List

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Suns, Double-A minor league affiliate of the Miami Marlins, announced today that RHP Joshua Schmidt has been transferred from Jacksonville to New Orleans. In a corresponding move, Catcher Jake Jefferies has been placed on temporary inactive list (attending a funeral). In another corresponding move, RHP Kyle Kaminska was traded by Miami to the Pittsburgh Pirates and assigned to Altoona. In another move, INF Zack Cox was acquired from the St. Louis organization and is currently on the DL with a right hamstring strain and UTIL Taylor Krick and RHP Rett Varner have been transferred from Jupiter to Jacksonville.
Schmidt heads to New Orleans for the first time after appearing in 37 games with Jacksonville in 2012. Schmidt recorded a 5-3 record with a 3.83 ERA in 42.1 innings of work. He struck out 41 and walked 27.
Jefferies heads to the temporary inactive list as he is attending a funeral. Jefferies is batting .234 with one home run and nine RBI in 107 plate appearances with the Suns in 2012. Jefferies has caught in 27 games for Jacksonville.
Kaminska heads to Double-A Altoona in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization in a trade involving then Miami first baseman Gabby Sanchez and Pirates outfielder Gorkys Hernandez and a 2013 draft pick. Kaminska appeared in 31 games with Jacksonville in 2012 and was 6-3 with a 5.11 ERA. He struck out 42 and walked nine batters in 49.1 innings of work.
Cox heads to Jacksonville after being acquired by the Miami Marlins in a trade involving then Miami RHP Edward Mujica. In Triple-A Memphis, Cox hit .254 with nine home runs and 30 RBI in 299 plate appearances. Cox played third base in 77 of the 84 games he played in Memphis. Cox was drafted in 2010 in the first round out of the University of Arkansas. Cox will be assigned a number upon arrival in Mobile, Ala.
Krick returns to Jacksonville after spending time with the Suns earlier in the 2012 season. In Jacksonville, Krick hit .154 in 13 plate appearances with the Suns. Krick heads from Jupiter where he hit .301 with 29 RBI in 61 games with Jupiter in 2012. Krick will be assigned a number upon arrival in Mobile, Ala.
Varner heads to Jacksonville for the first time in his career. Varner in 20 appearances with Jupiter compiled a 4-6 record with a 3.92 ERA. In 87.1 innings of work, Varner struck out 55 and walked 21. He started 14 out of the 20 appearances for Jupiter. Varner was drafted in the sixth round out of the University of Texas-Arlington in the 2010 MLB Draft. Varner will be assigned a number upon arrival in Mobile, Ala.
The Suns roster remains at the maximum of 25 allowed by the Southern League.
