Generals Blast Three Homers and Rout Barons 9-1

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. (AUGUST 1, 2012) - The Generals blasted three homers Wednesday and received six shutout innings from James Paxton en route to a 9-1 win over Birmingham. Jackson tied a season-high by scoring 6 runs in the top of the sixth inning. The win brings the club back to within 1 1/2 games of first place Chattanooga and evened the series with the Barons at 2-2.

Brad Miller reached base 5 times and was 3-for-3 at the plate with his second Jackson homer. Nate Tenbrink was 3-for-5 with a triple, homer and 3 RBI.

Joe Dunigan belted his league-leading 21st homer of the season to start off the big sixth inning. The 2-run shot to center broke a scoreless tie. Jackson scored four more runs in the inning, three on wild pitches by Barons reliever Nevin Griffith. Griffith walked 2, plunked 2 and threw 3 wild pitches in just 2/3 of an inning.

Tenbrink's 2-run homer was in the seventh, making the score 8-0 and Miller added a solo shot in the eighth to make it 9-0.

James Paxton (6-3) tossed 6.0 shutout innings, scattering 5 hits, walking just 1 and striking out 8 Barons. Jose Jimenez and Jandy Sena added scoreless frames in the eighth and ninth innings. Mauricio Robles walked 2 and struck out 2, surrendering a run in the ninth making the final score 9-1.

Francisco Martinez, Joe Dunigan and Chih-Hsien Chiang contributed two hits each on the night.

The Generals will play the finale of the five-game series, the rubber match against the Barons on Thursday night, with first pitch at 7:05 p.m. at Regions Park. LHP Anthony Fernandez (4-1, 2.89) will start for Jackson against RHP Nick McCully (1-1, 6.50) for Birmingham.
