Tonight's Game-- The RedHawks look to continue their successful homestand with another matchup against the Omaha Storm Chasers at 6:05 p.m.
Last Night-- Jose Cisnero made quite the first impression and Brett Wallace smacked a three-run homer as the RedHawks downed the Storm Chasers 6-2. Making his team and Triple-A debut, Cisnero (1-0) allowed one run over seven strong innings. He scattered six hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Leading 1-0 in the fourth, Wallace sent a three-run homer to center field to widen the gap. Matt Dominguez added a two-run double in the fifth to make it 6-1. The RedHawks scored all six runs with two outs and went 3-for-6 with runners in scoring position. Omaha starting pitcher Ryan Verdugo allowed a season-high six runs over five innings. Verdugo (7-3) struck out six and walked two. Storm Chasers outfielder Wil Myers hit a solo homer in the fourth inning--his Minor League leading 30 blast of the season.
Today's Probable Pitchers-- Brian Bass heads to the hill looking to turn things around...Bass is winless over his last 10 starts, going 0-4 with a 6.48 ERA...In his last start Monday in Memphis, Bass tied a season high by allowing seven runs over five innings, including a grand slam to Steven Hill...He has not gone past five innings in each of his last five starts...However, Bass has had a pair of good starts against Omaha this season...He's allowed five ER over 13 IP (3.46 ERA) and the Storm Chasers are hitting only .250 against him...Bass was drafted and signed by the Royals out of high school and made seven starts for Omaha in 2006 (1-5, 7.59)...Omaha's Jake Odorizzi will aim to tame the RedHawks...In 12 games since being promoted to Triple-A, the RedHawks are the only team to hang a loss on Odorizzi...On July 19 in Omaha, Odorizzi surrendered season highs in runs (7) and hits (10) as well as a pair of home runs against the RedHawks...He bounced back with a win in New Orleans last time out on Tuesday, allowing three runs--two earned--and four hits over 5.2 IP...Lately he has not consistently pitched deep into games, lasting five innings or less in three of his last five starts...Combined with seven starts at Double-A Northwest Arkansas, the 22-year-old has impressed in 2012, going 11-3 with a 3.25 ERA.
Blistering Heat, Blistering Bats-- The RedHawks are hitting .318 this month, easily their best monthly mark of the season. Only Reno (.323) has a better team average in the PCL during July. Their 16 wins in July are also tied for their highest monthly total this year (April).
Chasing Omaha-- The RedHawks have won the last five meetings with Omaha after dropping seven of eight to the Storm Chasers to start the season series. During the win streak, they've averaged 9.6 runs per game, scoring at least six each time out.
Fabulous Fernando-- Fernando Martinez has hit safely in 15 of his last 17 games, batting .360 (23-for-64) with three homers and 11 RBIs. Last night he became the second RedHawk, along with Jimmy Paredes, to collect 100+ hits this season.
Shuck-Tacular-- J.B. Shuck has hit safely in 13 of his last 14 games, batting .487 (19-for-39). His .303 season average is the highest it's been since May 3.
Uncle Buck-- Over his last eight games, Travis Buck is hitting .440 (11-for-25) with seven RBIs. He's had a multi-hit game in four of his last six starts.
Drought Beyond the Midwest-- Mike Hessman has not homered since July 5 in New Orleans. The 20-game streak without a homer is well past his previous long of 12. He still leads the PCL with 27 dingers this season.
The Extra Bat-- Tonight is the second of 16 straight as well as 20 of 24 games where the RedHawks will play with a designated hitter. The RedHawks are 12-12 in games using a DH, and collectively, team DH's this season have hit .281 with seven homers and 25 RBIs. The RedHawks have gotten more hits and RBIs (25 each) than strikeouts (22) out of the position.
Seven Heaven-- Last night marked the second time in the last four games a RedHawks starting pitcher tossed at least seven innings. It had occurred once in the 26 games prior to Wednesday
Encouraging Night-- Yesterday was the first time in 13 games the pitching staff allowed less than five runs, and it was also the first time since the break (17 games) they allowed as few as two runs. They've allowed at least five in 14 of 17 games since the break, and the staff ERA over the last 13 games is 6.71 (86 ER/115.1 IP). The 119 homers they have allowed for the season is the second-most in the PCL.
Against the Storm Chasers-- Through 13 games of the season series, the RedHawks are 6-7 against Omaha...In their most recent series, the RedHawks became just the second team ever to sweep the Storm Chasers in Werner Park as they hit .393 and scored 42 runs...They've hit 23 homers in 13 games against the Omaha pitching staff...Combined with his time with New Orleans, Matt Dominguez is hitting .367 with 17 RBIs...Brett Wallace is hitting .396 with 13 RBIs....Omaha's Clint Robinson has smacked four homers with 13 RBIs...Anthony Seratelli has only gone 10-for-45, but half of his hits have left the park...David Lough has driven in 15 runs in 12 games.
