Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill.-Trailing 2-1 into the bottom of the ninth, the Kane County Cougars pulled off a 3-2 stunner over the Quad Cities River Bandits on Saturday night in front of 11,121 fans at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.
Henry Moreno started the ninth-inning rally with a single to left off closer Heath Wyatt (4-3). Dean Espy laid down a two-strike sacrifice bunt to push Moreno to scoring position for pinch-hitter Danny Mateo. Mateo blasted a game-tying triple to allow Moreno to score. Three batters later, Jack Lopez laced a single to right, bringing home Mateo with the walk-off run.
Jason Mitchell (4-5) and Cody Fassold helped keep the Cougars (51-53, 17-17) in the ballgame with four scoreless innings combined. Kyle Smith started for the Cougars and worked five innings while allowing two runs on six hits. Quad Cities (51-52, 16-18) picked up their first tally in the third as Anthony Melchionda singled and scored on a groundout by David Medina.
In the fifth, it was Medina singling Melchionda home this time as the River Bandits grabbed a 2-1 advantage. Kane County scored their only run against starter Dail Villanueva in the first as Lopez singled and scored on a throwing error by third baseman Stephen Piscotty. Villanueva lasted six innings and fanned four. Kyle Barraclough worked two shutout frames out of the Quad Cities bullpen.
