Burlington Bees News Release
BURLINGTON, Iowa - The Burlington Bees (51-52, 19-15) used a strong all-around performance to beat the Cedar Rapids Kernels (42-62, 10-24) 6-to-1 on Saturday night. The Bees third straight win also gave the Bees only their second opening-game win in the last ten series.
As per his usual, A.J. Cole dominated the opposition. The right-hander set the first eleven batters down in or- der and only faced two batters over the minimum required through the first five innings. He went on to pitch six innings and only allow four hits, one walk, and one earned run. Cole also had six strikeouts and now has three wins in three starts against the Kernels.
The Bees helped Cole (5-2) earn his fifth win by giving the right-hander an early 2-to-0 lead after the first in- ning. Both Douglas Landaeta and Rashun Dixon had RBI doubles in the Bees' half of the first. Sean Jamieson and Landaeta scored the first two runs of the game off the two-baggers.
Extra-base hits became the theme of the night for the Bees' offense through the first three innings. The Bees' first four hits were doubles. Nick Rickles had the fourth double to start a rally with one out in the bottom of the third. Rashun Dixon broke the doubles trend with a base hit after Rickles' at bat, but Bees were threatening with runners at the corners.
Wade Kirkland capped off the rally by smashing a pitch into left field to scored Rickles and Dixon. Kirkland's hit was originally ruled an error on the left fielder, but later changed to a double. Kirkland continues to lead the Bees with 26 doubles and five of the Bees' first six hits were doubles.
The Bees eventually added two more runs when Max Muncy clobbered a 2-1 pitch from Michael Johnson to give the Bees a 6-to-1 lead. Johnson sent Muncy sprawling with the first pitch of Muncy's final at bats, but Muncy finished 2-for-2 against Johnson and earned his second professional home run. The Bees had gone nine games without a home run prior to Muncy's shot.
Seth Frankoff pitched three scoreless innings and had three strikeouts. The right-hander earned his first save and the Bees moved to 7-3 against the Kernels.
The Bees play game two at 2 p.m. CT on Sunday afternoon at Community Field. Julio Ramos (0-0) takes the bump as the Bees try to get to .500 for the first time since May 11 when they beat the Cedar Rapids Kernels to move to 17-17.
