Birds Unable to Rally, Fall to Lake Monsters 7-2

The Aberdeen IronBirds (16-24) were shut out by the Vermont Lake Monsters (19-21) after a brief two-run lead in the first inning. The IronBirds lost the chance at a sixth consecutive win last night, losing 7-2. Brian Roberts joins the IronBirds for the night on rehab assignment. Roberts played second and led off the line up.

With a loud crowd at Ripken Stadium, the IronBirds plated two runs early against the Lake Monsters starting with a RBI double to LF Austin Booker from DH Creede Simpson, his fifth of the season, to bring in 2B Brian Roberts. 3B Torsten Boss hit his 19th RBI and reached first off a fielding error by 1B Jacob Tanis and brought in Simpson to score. IronBirds led 2-0 in the bottom of the first.

Before going into the sixth, the Birds kept the Lake Monsters scoreless for five innings against RHP Sebastian Vader. Roberts turned a double off a line drive from DH Bruce Maxwell to end the bottom of the third.

The Lake Monsters knotted the score 2-2 in the top of the sixth. DH Bruce Maxwell picked up the first run off an RBI double to CF Anthony Vega, and allowed RF John Wooten to score. Maxwell tied up the score off a RBI forced-out grounder to Vader from SS Wilfredo Solano.

The Lake Monsters gained a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh starting with 2B Chris Bostick's seventh double of the season. Two batters later, Wooten hit an RBI single to bring in Bostick.

Sebastian Vader retired in the seventh after pitching a career high 6.1 innings, allowed 10 hits, three earned runs, one walk and got two strikeouts. Pitching change pitted right-handed Jose Nivar against Bruce Maxwell. Nivar led off the inning with a walk before stranding three runners and closed the inning with back-to-back strikeouts.

CF Brett Vertigan extended the lead for the Lake Monsters in the top of the eighth with an RBI infield single off the glove of RHP Nivar, and allowed Solano to score. Nivar allowed three walks before Maxwell plated three runs with his second double of the night, sixth of the season, and brought in Chad Lewis, Vertigan and Wooten to score.

The IronBirds are unable to rally, and fall to the Lake Monsters 7-2. Relief pitcher Nate Eppley (2-0) picked up the win, while Sebastian Vader (1-5) took the loss.

The IronBirds and Lake Monsters will face-off in the second of the three game series Sunday night in Aberdeen. RHP David Richardson (2-2, 3.48) will take the mound for the Birds while Vermont will turn to RHP Tyler Vail (0-2, 6.68). First pitch from Ripken Stadium is set for 5:35 p.m.
