Calfapietra Wins 600th Game
July 25, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) New Jersey Jackals
On a sun-splashed Wednesday afternoon, the Jackals got a brilliant performance from right-hander Steve Fox who went seven innings of one-run ball, helping the Jackals' to a 5-2 win over the visiting Worcester Tornadoes. With the win, Jackals' manager Joe Calfapietra now has 600 for his career over 13 managerial seasons. His 10-year tenure is the longest active in the Cam-Am League.
Fox allowed just one run on three hits while striking out nine. The righty not only ties the Can-Am League lead for wins with nine, but is now the league's leader in strikeouts with 81. He is now 9-1 on the year.
Not to be outdone was Tornadoes starter Mike Gedman, who made perhaps his best start of the season. The left-hander went seven innings, allowing four runs, one earned, while striking out a career-high seven. He is now 2-2 on the year.
Unfortunately for Gedman, the Jackals offense was too hot to handle. New Jersey, who has seen their team batting average rise to .291, utilized a couple of base hits and some costly errors to score three unearned runs in the first inning.
Leadoff man Chris Curran led the way for the Jackals, going 3-4 with two runs scored. Carlos Guzman and Nick Giarraputo both recorded RBIs for New Jersey.
The Tornadoes got their one run off a Cam Kneeland sacrifice fly in the second inning.
The Jackals are now 37-27 after completing the three-game sweep of the Tornadoes, their third series sweep of the season. They trail the Quebec Capitales for first place in the Can-Am standings by six games.
Worcester drops to 18-46.
New Jersey has an off day tomorrow before heading down Route 3 to play the Newark Bears in a three-game set. It starts a streak of 23 straight games for New Jersey.
