Temperature Was Hot, But Cats Were HotterJuly 22, 2012 - North American League (NAL) Fort Worth Cats
"I didn't think I was going to make it because of the heat, but we got by," Beatty said.
Marshall didn't have an impressive game in game one on paper, as he went 0-for-3, but he did have the only number that mattered. His lone RBI scored Randall Thorpe, who was running for first baseman Jose Ruiz. After a Brandon Jones single, a sacrifice bunt from Chad Gabriel, and an intentional walk of Kenny Gilbert, Thorpe scored on Marshall's near double-play ball.
Fort Worth starter James Giulietti (3-4) was lights out in the opening game throwing a seven inning complete game shutout, only allowing four hits and striking out four Colts' batters.
Casey Russell (1-0) continued the Cats' pitching dominance with a six inning performance in the second game. Russell gave up one run on four hits and struck out three batters. Closer Jeff Jamnik continued his perfection in the final inning of ballgames and earned his thirteenth save in as many opportunities.
"Once that lead got established, it put some wind in the sails," Casey Russell said.
San Angelo hurler Mark Willinsky (4-4) had similar numbers to Giulietti up until Marshall's final plate appearance finishing with one run on five hits in his 6 2/3 innings of work. Willinsky fanned six Fort Worth hitters.
In the afternoon game, Jose Sanchez (1-3) pitched a complete game and only allowed two hits, homeruns to Jones and Beatty. Sanchez struck out two Cats' batters.
With the losses, the Colts' record falls to 26-30 and they remain in fourth place of the United League, 8.5 games behind first place Edinburg. The Fort Worth Cats improve their record to 32-23 and regained sole possession of second place, 2 games behind Edinburg.
San Angelo will return home for a four game set with the Abilene Prairie Dogs and Fort Worth will travel to first-place Edinburg for a four game series in which the Cats will attempt to close in on the two game lead that the Roadrunners have on the Cats. The first game is Monday night at 7:05 p.m.
