July 22, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Jersey Jackals News Release
The Jackals' late rally fell short against the Gary SouthShore RailCats as New Jersey dropped the finale in Little Falls by the 9-6 final.
Down 9-1 in the eighth, the Jackals put the first six batters on base to score four runs. In the ninth, they sent the winning run to the plate, but Matt Nandin popped out to second base with the bases loaded to end the ballgame.
On a hot, humid Sunday, Saturday's scheduled match-up resumed with the RailCats leading 3-0 heading into the top of the seventh inning. Neither team scored in the final frame
A half-hour later these two teams were back on the field for the finale of the four-game set. For the fourth straight game, the RailCats got on the scoreboard in the first inning. They would not look back.
RailCats' right-hander Morgan Coombs earned his fourth win of the season after pitching six innings of one-run ball. He allowed seven hits and struck out five.
Lefty Craig Clark started for the Jackals. He went five innings, allowing five runs on eight hits. He moves to 4-5 on the season.
The top third of the RailCats lineup combined for seven runs. Adam Klein went 1-2 with three walks, Mike Massaro went three for five and Mike Coles went 3-4 with a three-run home run.
Chris Curran extended his hitting streak to 10 games in the Sunday matinee.
With the loss, the Jackals are now 34-27, seven games back of the first-place Capitales. The American Association's RailCats move to seven-and-a-half games back of the Wichita Wingnuts in the Central Division.
The Jackals will continue their seven-game homestand when the Worcester Tornadoes come to town for the first time this season. Isaac Pavlik (6-1, 3.40) is scheduled to start for New Jersey. Worcester's starter is yet to be determined. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 with the pregame starting at 6:55.
