Squirrels Fly by Curve In, 10-2 Loss

RICHMOND, Va. - An eight-run third inning by the Richmond Flying Squirrels proved insurmountable for the Altoona Curve on Tuesday night in a, 10-2, loss in the second game of the three-game series at The Diamond. With the loss, Altoona has now dropped five straight games since winning its first game of the season in Akron to start the road trip last Thursday.
The Squirrels were able to push a run across off Tim Alderson (4-4) in the first inning but opened up the game with eight runs in the third as they sent 12 men to the plate. Alderson departed after 2.2 innings of work with the Curve trailing 5-0 and turned things over to Nathan Baker with the bases loaded. Baker entered and walked Ehire Adrianza to walk in a run before Daniel Mayora doubled to left-center to clear the bases and place the Squirrels ahead, 9-0.
Altoona was able to find its way on the scoreboard off Mike Kickham (8-7) in the fourth when Quincy Latimore doubled in Brock Holt to make it a 9-1 game. Jeremy Farrell provided the Curve with its second and final run with a solo homer, his fourth overall home run of the season, in the seventh off Kickham.
Robbie Grossman recorded two hits for the second straight day and was the only Curve player with a multi-hit game. Mike Colla tossed two scoreless innings of relief and was followed by Vic Black, who struck out the side in his only inning of work on Tuesday night.
Since the All-Star Break, Altoona has scored a total of 11 runs in six games and is 1-5.
Having lost five straight, the Curve (44-50) will seek a win in the 7:05 p.m. finale with Richmond (50-47) on Wednesday to try and head home with some momentum before a homestand that begins on Thursday. RHP Kyle McPherson (1-4, 4.40), who has lost four straight decisions since winning his 2012 debut in Binghamton, gets the nod for the Curve on Wednesday while RHP Justin Fitzgerald (5-6, 3.95) throws for the Squirrels.
