Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
With two of the River Bandits leading sluggers, Luis Mateo and Colin Walsh, on the disabled list, the offense showed no signs of weakness, backing a strong seven-inning start by Kyle Hald with a trio of extra-base hits, as Quad Cities took the rubber match with the Cougars, 6-1, at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark Friday night.
Quad Cities (10-5 second half, 45-39 overall) opened the scoring in the top of the second inning against Cougars' right-hander Kellen Moen (4-4). After Moen set down the first two batters consecutively, River Bandits first baseman David Medina singled. The next batter - third baseman Anthony Melchionda - took a pitch over the left field wall for his first professional home run, a two-run shot that gave the River Bandits a 2-0 lead.
Left-hander Kyle Hald (4-4) allowed a lone run in the bottom of the second, on an RBI double by Alex Llanos that scored Michael Antonio. That was the only blemish on the line of Hald, who earned his second road win of the season, going seven strong innings, and allowing one run on five hits and one walk, while striking out seven.
Kane County (9-6, 43-42) allowed two more runs in the top of the sixth inning. Roberto Reyes led off the inning with a double off Moen, and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Williams. Nick Martini singled to center drive in Reyes, giving the River Bandits a 3-1 lead. Stephen Piscotty advanced Martini to second with a single, as well, before an Anthony Garcia groundout and a throwing error by second baseman Daniel Mateo allowed Martini to score the fourth run of the night for Quad Cities.
The River Bandits tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the eighth when Garcia hit his 11th home run of the season to right field, scoring Piscotty - who was hit by a pitch in the preceding at-bat. Garcia extended his hitting streak to fifteen games, including every game in the season's second half thus far.
Piscotty also extended his modest hitting streak to six games, dating back to July 1 against Wisconsin. Right-hander Travis Miller pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Hald, allowing just one base hit to the Cougars.
Quad Cities returns home for a three-game series with the Clinton Lumberkings, beginning Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Left-hander Dail Villanueva (5-4) is scheduled to start for the River Bandits and right-hander Trevor Miller (5-5) is set to start for Clinton.
