July 2, 2012 - Texas League (TL1)
Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

Tulsa (2-6, 42-36) @ Corpus Christi (6-3, 43-36)

Corpus Christi's home winning streak ended at nine last night as Northwest Arkansas snuck out of Dodge with a 2-1 victory over the Hooks. Columbian right-hander Sugar Ray Marimon, making his second Double-A appearance, allowed just two hits over 5.2 shutout frames. The lone run for Corpus Christi came on catcher Chris Wallace's 410-foot home run to center field in the seventh off Buddy Bauman. Ryan Dennick struck out one in a perfect ninth to notch the save for the Naturals.

Ross Seaton, charged with two runs on six hits in seven innings, was saddled with the tough-luck loss. The Houston native walked one and fanned five. No. 9 hitter Julio Rodriguez hit a home run to left to lead off the third and Eric Duncan delivered a two-out RBI single in the fourth, accounting for Northwest Arkansas' offense.

The Hooks welcome Tulsa to Whataburger Field for the second half of their six-game homestand. The Drillers, who had their game in San Antonio last night postponed due to heavy rain, sputter into town with a five-game losing streak.

Tonight's Matchup:

RHP Dan Houston (7-6, 3.38) vs. RHP Jake Buchanan (4-5, 5.20)

Houston, selected by Colorado in the seventh round of the 2008 draft out of Boston College, makes his 16th start of the year and first against the Hooks. Houston was the starting pitcher of the North in Thursday's Texas League All-Star Game at ONEOK Field in Tulsa. He authored two scoreless frames as the North beat the South, 3-1. In his previous regular-season start, Houston was tagged for five runs on nine hits over six innings vs. Springfield last Sunday to suffer the loss. June 19 at Northwest Arkansas, he tossed 7.1 innings of three-run ball in a no-decision. Over his last three starts, Houston has struck out 16 without walking a batter. He enters play tonight ranked among the league leaders in innings pitched (96.0, 2nd), wins (T-5th) and ERA (7th). Houston's best two starts of the year were against Arkansas (April 24 & June 14). He won both decisions and pitched eight innings in each game, allowing two total runs (1 ER) and one walk against 13 strikeouts. Houston's performance on April 24 won him Texas League Pitcher of the Week honors. A California League All-Star in 2011, he spilt the season evenly between Modesto at Tulsa, going a combined 11-5 with a 3.36 ERA in 26 starts. Houston walked 40 and fanned 118 in 163.1 innings. Houston spent all of 2010 in the Nuts rotation, posting a 5-7 record and 5.92 ERA.

- 10 of his 15 outings have been quality starts...has allowed 3 runs or fewer in 11 starts

- Went 2-2 with a 2.48 ERA thru 5 May starts

- 1-1 with a 3.21 ERA in 2 starts vs. CC last season (5 K, 1 BB, 14.0 IP)

Buchanan, an eighth-round pick of the Astros in 2010 out of North Carolina State, makes his 16th start this season and his third opposite the Drillers. Buchanan tossed 7.2 shutout frames last Saturday at Frisco to earn the victory. He held the RoughRiders to six hits and two walks while fanning four. His previous start was in San Antonio on June 18 when he got shelled for 10 runs (5 ER) on 8 hits over 2.2 innings. Buchanan had allowed 19 runs (14 ER) and 24 hits in 14.1 frames (8.79 ERA) in three starts from June 6-18. He pitched well in April, going 1-0 with a 4.13 ERA, striking out 20 against 5 walks in 24.0 innings. In 25 starts last season for Lancaster in the California League, Buchanan was 5-10 with a 3.91 ERA. Selected as the Astros 2011 Minor League Pitcher of the Year, Buchanan became the first Lancaster pitcher to start a minimum of 20 games and finish the season with an ERA under 4.00 since former Cy Young Award winner Brandon Webb accomplished the feat in 2001 (28 starts, 3.99 ERA).

- Features a GO/AO ratio of 2.25 for the season

- In 2 starts vs. Tulsa this season is 0-0 with a 3.97 ERA (2 BB, 9 K, 11.1 IP)
