Earthquakes Rally from Two-Goal Deficit to Defeat La Galaxy 4-3 InJuly 1, 2012 - Major League Soccer (MLS) San Jose Earthquakes
The win solidifies the Earthquakes' (11-3-3, 36 pts.) spot atop the Western Conference and Supporters' Shield standings. San Jose remains three points ahead of D.C. United (10-5-3, 33 pts.) with a game in hand. At the midway point of the season, San Jose is off to its best 17-game start in club history.
San Jose opened the scoring early with Steven Lenhart tapping in his sixth goal of the season after LA Galaxy goalkeeper Josh Saunders couldn't handle a blast from Marvin Chavez.
The Galaxy came roaring back with three consecutive first-half goals. David Beckham equalized with a free kick in the 31st minute, a Jason Hernandez own goal sent the Galaxy ahead in the 36th minute and Landon Donovan padded LA's lead in the 41st minute. However, San Jose would answer.
Victor Bernardez started San Jose's climb back, one-timing a corner kick from Marvin Chavez in the 44th minute. The goal was Bernardez's first with the Earthquakes.
After the break, Sam Cronin slid to send a shot past Saunders to tie the match at 3-3. The play started with a half-field pass from Steven Beitashour and continued with Lenhart before finishing at Cronin's feet. It was the midfielder's first goal in three seasons with the Quakes.
Finally, Chris Wondolowski netted his league-leading 14th goal of the season to cap the comeback in the 61st minute. Chavez started the sequence with a corner kick and Ramiro Corrales flicked the ball on with his head before Wondolowski back-heeled his shot past Saunders.
The seven combined goals on Saturday sets a new record for most in a regular season California Clasico.
With their pair in the final 45 minutes, the Earthquakes extended their league lead in second-half tallies to 23 on the season. San Jose also leads MLS with 21 goals in the final 30 minutes of games.
The Earthquakes are back in action on Tuesday, July 3 against the Portland Timbers at JELD-WEN Field. The match kicks off at 7:30 p.m. PT on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, 95.3 KRTY and 1370 KZSF.
