Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - A big inning turned into big trouble in the Tacoma Rainiers 11-4 loss to the Las Vegas 51s in front of a sell-out crowd of 7,435 fans at Cheney Stadium on Thursday.
Leading Las Vegas 3-1, the Rainiers surrendered an insurmountable six runs in the top of the fifth inning. Lynwood, WA native Travis Snyder tied the game with a two-run single off reliever Steven Hensley, and Moises Sierra drove in the go-ahead runs for the 51s with another two-run single two batters later.
Designated hitter Eric Thames plated a fifth run in the inning with an RBI-double. Infielder Adeiny Hechavarria rounded out the 51s runs in the frame after driving in Thames on a force out.
Tacoma originally held a 2-0 lead thanks to Luis Jimenez's two-run homer off 51s starter Jamie Moyer with two outs in the first inning. Catcher Adam Moore led off the second inning with a solo home run that stretched a 2-1 Rainiers lead back to two runs before Las Vegas' six-run eruption in the fifth inning.
The Rainiers combined to collect 12 hits against the 51s on Thursday, with Jimenez, Moore, Nick Franklin, Alex Liddi, and Mike Wilson all turning in two-hit efforts.
Reliever Steven Hensley (0-1) was dealt the loss after surrendering six runs on five hits and walking two without retiring a batter in the fifth. Starter Danny Hultzen limited Las Vegas to one run on three hits over 4.0 innings in his Triple-A debut. The left-hander walked four and struck out six batters in the contest.
Moyer, the 49-year-old former Mariners pitching legend, earned the win in his first start since signing a minor league contract with the Toronto Blue Jays on June 28. The left-hander held Tacoma to three runs on seven hits and struck out six over 5.0 innings.
The Rainiers (32-47) hope to capture a series win over Las Vegas (45-35) in the rubber match between the two clubs tomorrow, June 28. Right-hander Brian Sweeney (3-1, 4.62) is slated to start for Tacoma in the series finale against right-hander Sean O'Sullivan (1-0, 0.00). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., with Friday Nights Fireworks immediately following the game.
