First Place Owls Top Blowfish

FOREST CITY, N.C.- The Forest City Owls topped the Columbia Blowfish 3-2 in walk off fashion Thursday night in Coastal Plain League play. The loss puts the Blowfish into third place with a game remaining in the first half. The Blowfish trailed from the beginning after seeing Forest City score two runs in the bottom of the first off of starter Derek Beasley. Beasley went seven innings giving up two runs on seven hits while striking out five. The Blowfish answered with a run of their own in the fourth off of a Gabe Loweree sacrifice fly to center that scored Michael Wilson. The Blowfish tied the game in the seventh on an error by the Forest City shortstop. The Owls walked off with the win in the ninth on a T.J. Sutton RBI single with two outs. Connor Sullivan pitched the final inning and two thirds giving up a run on one hit while striking out one. The Blowfish return home Friday night against the Florence RedWolves; first pitch is set for 7:05 and tickets are available at www.blowfishbaseball.com. The Columbia Blowfish are in their seventh season at Historic Capital City Stadium and are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 51 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
