Morehead City Marlins News Release
MOREHEAD CITY, N.C.- The Morehead City Marlins (10-16) used three runs in the seventh inning to propel themselves past the Martinsville Mustangs (9-18) in a 3-1 victory Thursday evening at Big Rock Stadium.
In the seventh inning, Sal Annunziata, Robbie Rea and Eric Peterson notched consecutive singles to lead off the frame, as Rea's single drove home Annunziata. After a sacrifice bunt by Corey Bass advanced Rea and Peterson, Brandon Bass lined an 0-2 pitch through the right side to score both runners and give the Marlins a 3-1 lead.
Taylor Robinson, A.J. Goetz, Evan Zerff and William Prince combined to allow just six hits on the evening, with Goetz (1-0) earning the win tossing a scoreless seventh inning. Robinson pitched well in his fifth start of the season, going six innings and allowing just one run on five hits. Prince earned his fifth save on the season in as many chances.
The Mustangs scored their lone run in the second inning on an RBI-double by Adam Pendleton, scoring Ryan Bull from first base. On the play, the relay throw from Jarrett Higgins to Geoff DeGroot to Bass at home gunned down Derrick Hopkins who was attempting to score from first base.
Dylan Wolchik (0-1) took the loss for the Mustangs, giving up three runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh. The loss spoiled a strong outing by Mustangs starter Jake Lambert, who shut out the Marlins in six innings of work.
Offensively, the Marlins were led by Rea who was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while Higgins was 2-for-4 and Annunziata singled, scored and walked.
The Marlins are back in action tomorrow night as they host the Peninsula Pilots in the Coastal Plain League first-half finale where it's Scout Night and Facebook Friday. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. as Matt Sutor has the live broadcast on CPL WebPass beginning approximately 10 minutes prior to first pitch.
Notes: This was the only meeting between the teams this season... With his fourth inning single, Sam Ott has hit safely in six straight games... The Marlins pitching staff did not walk a batter for the second time this season.
