Sharks Triumphant in Return to CPL Play

June 28, 2012 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release

Wilmington, N.C. - Three errors committed by the Wilmington Sharks (15-11) in the first inning gave the visiting Peninsula Pilots (11-15-1) an early 1-0 lead, but the hosts returned to Coastal Plain League action for the first time since Sunday at Petersburg with a 5-4, come from behind win.

Despite the trio of miscues behind him defensively in the first, plus another before he left the game in the fifth, starter Nick Price put together a solid effort on the mound over 5.2 innings. Price surrendered just two hits, and was charged with only one earned run out of four total. He walked five and struck out three in his fourth no-decision of the season, although Wilmington has won every game started by Price this season. A fifth error was also committed in the ninth inning.

Only one run scored in the top of the first for Peninsula, and the Sharks were able to bounce back easily with a tying run in the second on a Lloyd Enzor double that brought Scott Coleman home. The Pilots took another lead in the third at 2-1, and the score would remain there until the visitors added another pair in the sixth.

Alex Freedman, Jeff May, Brad Shaban and Casey Goss were the first four batters in the seventh inning for the Sharks, with all four reaching base and scoring to give the Sharks a 5-4 lead that Wes Hatley and Andrew Brockett would hold onto, despite Aaron Hoover getting the win in relief.

May and Coleman each turned in multi-hit nights, with both scoring a run and Coleman adding a pair of runs batted in on the go-ahead single in the seventh.

The Sharks host the Wilson Tobs on Friday, then head north for a rematch at Fleming Stadium on Saturday. For more on the Sharks, visit wilmingtonsharks.com, find Sharky Sharks on Facebook and follow @ILMSharks on Twitter.
