Blowfish Hold off Grizzlies 6-5June 17, 2012 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain) Columbia Blowfish
Wyatt Brown started on the mound for the Blowfish and threw seven strong innings giving up three runs on seven hits while striking out five. Brown kept the Grizzlies scoreless until the sixth inning when he gave up back-to-back walks to lead off the inning and then two singles to score three runs.
The Blowfish roughed up the Grizzlies pitching staff from the beginning scoring a run in the first and adding four more in the second. In the first Ryan Gebhardt led off with a single and later scored on a Joshua Miller double. In the second Gebhardt doubled in two runs and scored on an error by the shortstop.
In the sixth the Blowfish added a run after Gabe Loweree led off with a single and later scored on a Jarrod Reed sacrifice fly to left. The Blowfish added their sixth and final run in the eighth.
Leading 6-3 going into the ninth the Blowfish handed the ball to closer Adam Albers who gave up two runs and with runners on second and third was able to induce a game ending ground ball to second.
The Blowfish return to action Tuesday as they host the Marlins of Morehead City at Capital City Stadium. Tickets are available at www.blowfishbaseball.com.
The Columbia Blowfish are in their seventh season at Historic Capital City Stadium and are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 51 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
