Zach Borenstein joins Kernels from Tempe; Gary Mitchell to DL

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announce that INF Zach Borenstein will join the Kernels from Extended Spring Training in Tempe, AZ and that INF Gary Mitchell has been placed on the 7-day DL with an undisclosed knee injury. Mike LaCassa, Minor League Operations Manager for the LA Angels, announced the move on Wednesday.The Angels selected Borenstein, 21, in the 23rd round of the 2011 Free Agent Draft out of Eastern Illinois University. He spent last season with the AZL Angels, batting .274 with 2 HR and 21 RBI in 31 games. He attended Buffalo Grove (IL) HS and is a native of Buffalo Grove, IL.
Mitchell was on the Kernels 2012 Opening Day Roster and is batting .261 with 7 HR and 18 RBI in 34 games for the Kernels.
Borenstein will join the Kernels in Peoria and will be available for tonight's 6:30 pm game with the Chiefs. With today's transactions, the Kernels roster remains at the MWL maximum of 25 active players, with two players on the disabled list.
The Kernels begin a three game road trip in Peoria tonight at 6:30 pm. They return to Perfect Game Field on Saturday, June 9th and open a six game home stand through Thursday, June 14th.
