Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
DAVENPORT, Iowa (JUNE 3, 2012) - The Burlington Bees' first two hits left the ballpark Sunday night, and they were enough to give the Bees a 3-1 win over the Quad Cities River Bandits in a game delayed one hour and five minutes by rain and played before 2,445 fans at Modern Woodmen Park.
Trailing 1-0 in the fourth, the Bees (26-30) got their first hit on a game-tying solo home run by designated hitter B.A. Vollmuth, who drove a 1-0 pitch from right-hander Robert Stock off the batter's eye beyond the center field fence.
In the top of the sixth against left-hander Danny Miranda (3-3), Burlington shortstop Sean Jamieson drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. After a flyout by right fielder Bobby Crocker, first baseman Doug Landaeta got the Bees' second hit, a two-run home run to the berm beyond the left-field fence.
Landaeta's sixth home run gave the Bees a 3-1 lead and put left-hander Jeff Urlaub (4-2) in line for the win. Urlaub entered after play resumed following the rain delay in the first inning. He finished with 4 2/3 innings pitched, three hits, no walks and four strikeouts.
Left-hander Jonathan Cornelius worked a scoreless first inning for the River Bandits, and Bees right-hander A.J. Cole issued a leadoff walk in the first to designated hitter Luis Mateo. After Mateo stole second and reached third on a groundout by center fielder Nick Martini, second baseman Colin Walsh worked a 3-1 count against Cole before play was suspended.
Neither starting pitcher returned after the delay. Walsh hit the first pitch he saw from Urlaub for an RBI groundout to second base that gave the River Bandits a 1-0 lead. The RBI tied Walsh for the league lead with Kaleb Cowart of Cedar Rapids. Both players have 44.
Stock allowed Vollmuth's home run and one walk while striking out two batters in three innings of work. Miranda allowed Landaeta's two-run homer and a walk while striking out two batters in three innings. Left-hander Bob Revesz allowed a hit and posted three strikeouts in the final two innings for Quad Cities.
Following Urlaub, Bees left-hander Chas Mye allowed a hit and a walk with two strikeouts in two scoreless innings. Right-hander Jonathan Joseph worked around a hit and two walks to strike out two batters in two scoreless innings and picked up his second save.
Quad Cities (28-29) had its best scoring chance in the eighth, when first baseman Roberto De La Cruz drew a leadoff walk, Martini hit a one-out single, and Walsh drew his league-leading 36th base on balls to load the bases. But third baseman Tyler Rahmatulla grounded out to Jamieson at shortstop to end the threat.
The rubber match of the three-game series is Monday at 7 p.m. at Modern Woodmen Park. River Bandits left-hander Kyle Hald (1-3) and Bees right-hander Seth Frankoff (1-3) are the scheduled starters.
