
Whitecaps Rally Late, Win 7-6

Lake County Captains News Release
(Eastlake, OH) - The West Michigan Whitecaps (25-29) defeated the Lake County Captains (25-28) on Thursday afternoon by a score of 7-6 at Classic Park in Eastlake. The four run ninth inning staked West Michigan to a one run lead entering the last half inning. In the top of the ninth the Whitecaps used a total of four hits, three straight extra base hits; highlighted by a triple by Aaron Westlake which tied the ballgame. Westlake scored on a double by Jason King and the Whitecaps had the one run advantage.
West Michigan scored first. In the top half of the second inning Eugino Suarez bunted for a single and then scored on a double by Dean Green and the Whitecaps were out to the early 1-0 lead. Lake County answered in their half of the second inning, Jerrud Saborin singled and eventually came around to score, the same held true for Alex Monsalve. Both of the base runners came home to score on a double by Robel Garcia and it was a 2-1 lead. Lake County tacked on one more in the inning when Nick Bartolone knocked in a run with an RBI ground out. The Captains led 3-1 after two innings.
In the third inning, West Michigan scored a run cutting the Captains lead to 3-2. West Michigan used a bunt single by Suarez and a Dean Green double to plate the run. Not to be out done, Lake County scored a run in the bottom of the inning, as Jordan Smith singled and went to third on a throwing error. Sabourin singled him home and the lead expanded back to two runs it was 4-2 Lake County after three innings. The Captains added a run in the bottom of the fifth when the duo of Smith and Sabourin was at it again. Smith doubled to lead off the inning and Sabourin singled him home and the score was 5-2 Captains.
In the seventh, the Whitecaps scored a single run by taking advantage of a Captains error and the score heading into the stretch was 5-3. The Captains plated a run in the bottom of the seventh when Smith singled and came around to score on an Alex Monsalve single. The Captains led 6-3 after seven innings of play.
LHP Kyle Ryan (3-4) got the nod for West Michigan and did not get a decision. Ryan's line was 4.2 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1BB, 3 K. Nick Avila (2-1) earned the win. Avila pitched three and one third innings allowing just four hits, one earned run and struck out four. Jade Todd pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his first save of the season.
RHP Cody Anderson (4-2) took the ball for the Captains and pitched five innings allowing seven hits two runs and both were earned, he walked three and also struck out three. Mason Radeke pitched for the Captains. Radeke went two innings, allowing three hits one run and it was earned he walked one and fanned one as well. Cole Cook pitched one and one third innings for the Captains and allowed two hits, three runs all earned. Cook walked one and struck out two. Jeff Johnson (3-2) entered the game with one out in the ninth and two runs already home. Johnson gave up a tripe and a double and the go-ahead run before working out of the inning. Johnson was saddled with the loss.
Friday's game is a Fireworks Friday night presented by State Farm Insurance Agent Tom Ferguson and 92.3 FM, The Fan. Fans will be treated to a post-game fireworks extravaganza and it is the first Faith Night presented by 95.5 FM the FISH. After the fireworks, there will be a concert featuring the Joey Skoch Band. There will also be a Testimony of Faith provided by a Captains player. Game time is 7 PM. The Captains will start LHP Shawn Morimando (1-1, 2.40) and West Michigan will counter with RHP Brennan Smith (1-3, 3.91).
