The West Virginia Power beat the Lakewood BlueClaws 10-5 Wednesday at Appalachian Power Park to complete a sweep of the three game series. The Power scored six in the second to help Matt Benedict secure the win.
In the bottom of the first, Alen Hanson hit an 0-1 pitch over the centerfield wall for a 1-0 lead after one West Virginia batter.
The Power sent 11 batters to the plate in the second against BlueClaws starter Ethan Stewart and the bullpen. Dan Gamache singled, Chris Lashmet walked, and Kirk Singer singled to load the bases. Junior Sosa hit a ground ball on the infield and the throw came home for a force play, but Lakewood catcher John Hill didn't have his foot on the plate, allowing a run to score on the error for a 2-0 lead. After a sacrifice fly made it 3-0 Power, West Virginia reached on four straight hits and a second sac fly to drive in runs for 7-0 advantage.
The BlueClaws broke up the shutout in the fourth with a pair of runs, but the Power quickly got them back in the bottom of the fifth. Gamache doubled and scored on the first of two triples by Lashmet in the game. Lashmet later scored on a single by Sosa.
Lakewood scored another pair of runs in the seven, but West Virginia responded with a run of its own in the bottom of half the inning for a 10-4 lead. Wednesday marked the first time this season that the Power scored double digit runs in a game.
In the ninth, the BlueClaws closed the scoring against Rinku Singh, scoring once on four hits.
Benedict (3-3) pitched six innings in his fourth quality start this season and garnered the win, while Stewart (0-6) surrendered seven runs, five of which were earned, over an inning and a third to suffer the loss.
