Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Lexington, KY - The Augusta GreenJackets had leadoff runners reach base in six of the nine innings on Wednesday night but couldn't do much with them as the GreenJackets didn't push a run across until the ninth inning of a 6-1 loss to the Lexington Legends. With the win, the Legends took two of three in the series.
Lexington led early with a first-inning run on Matt Duffy's RBI single to go up 1-0. It was the first of four two-out runs the Legends would score in the game. Roberto Pena's RBI groundout turned Jesse Wierzbicki's second-inning leadoff triple into a run to double Lexington's lead to 2-0. But it was the fifth inning where the Legends would do their most damage and chase Augusta starter Chris Marlowe.
Batting around in the inning, the Legends scored three times and though they'd leave the bases loaded to end the inning, Lexington led 5-0 at the end of the fifth. Jordan Scott's RBI double made it 3-0 Lexington. Marlowe got the second out, but walked two more to load the bases and was sent to the showers. Adalberto Mejia came out of the bullpen to yield a two-run, bases-loaded single to Wierzbicki to push the Lexington advantage to 5-0.
Marlowe (1-2) allowed five runs on four hits and a season-high five walks in 4.2 innings, striking out three.
Mejia surrendered a two-out run in the eighth on Delino DeShields's RBI single to put the Legends up 6-0. Augusta got their lone run in the ninth when Jeff Arnold doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on a double play ball to put the GreenJackets on the board at 6-1.
Lexington lefty Luis Cruz (5-1) scattered seven hits and a walk through seven shutout innings to get the win for the Legends. It was the third straight night in the series where the Legends starter worked through the seventh inning.
The GreenJackets also did not commit an error in the game - their ninth straight without an error. That extended the South Atlantic League record the GreenJackets set in the category last night.
On Thursday, the GreenJackets head to Asheville to open up a four-game series with the Tourists. Kyle Crick (1-3, 3.06) takes the ball for the GreenJackets in the series opener against Asheville's Ben Alsup (6-1, 4.66). First pitch from Asheville comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1340 AM and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
The GreenJackets return home on Tuesday June 5th to open a three-game series against the Greensboro Grasshoppers with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. Single-game tickets for any GreenJackets home game are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
